Learn more to protect yourself against Phishing Scams
What is Phishing?
Phishing is an internet scam where fraudsters obtain your personal information through the use of “pop-ups” or emails. The links from these “pop-ups” or emails deceive you into disclosing personal information such as Social Security Numbers, Bank/Credit Card Numbers and Driver’s License Numbers.
Oftentimes, the “pop-ups” or emails appear as though they are from an authentic or known source, however, it directs you to a “spoof” website that requests you to enter personal and sensitive information.
How do I protect myself from Phishing?
There are several steps you may take to avoid becoming a Phishing Victim.
- Don’t open or reply to “pop-ups” or emails from an unknown source.
- Make sure you only disclose your personal information with a trustworthy source.
- Note that companies such as banks and credit card companies do not call or email you to request or verify your personal information.
- Use a firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware software to protect your computer against intrusions.
- Review your accounts on a routine basis to ensure the charges on your accounts are valid and accurate.
- Be careful when opening up email attachments.
